Just One Day
I was lying. On the floor. He began to tie me up. I never thought I would write about this. It was deeply intimate. The scariest moment of my life.
For a split second, I remembered my wedding day. A beautiful summer morning beneath the Alps. I was getting ready in my hotel room. In another room, my soon-to-be husband was doing the same. We weren’t allowed to see each other, they say it brings bad luck.
His best friend was helping him. I had asked him to come collect a gift I had prepared.
I had wrapped it carefully in luxurious lingerie packaging. To fool him. He came to my room, took the gift, and left.
When my husband opened it, he found a small, worn-out paperback book. Inside was a dedication. And a letter.
The letter read:
"Dear husband,
today is our wedding day. I’m giving you this gift. No, it’s not a fancy watch or something worth thousands of euros.
I decided to give you something more precious, something that has nothing to do with glamour or appearance, because those are meaningless in the context of our love.
'The world only exists in your eyes. You can make it as big or as small as you want.'
F. Scott Fitzgerald
I want your world to be big today and every day. Full of joy, opportunities, and wonder, just like mine is. And I wish for us to keep discovering the same world together for the rest of our lives."
It was just an ordinary book. But you couldn’t buy it anywhere. My husband checked every possibility. He had wanted it for years. The only copy was in the library. It was by Franz Kafka: A Web of Madness and Pain. I found it second-hand for €5.
This book’s worth far exceeded its price, just like fine jewelry can transcend its material value.
The sun was shining, just like on my wedding day. The door to our boutique was open. I was alone. He came in. A knit cap pulled down over his face. He leapt over the counter. With a large hunting knife, he came toward me. “Money,” he said. Then: “Lie down.” He began tying my hands. Then my legs. But he changed his mind, it would take too long. Someone could walk in at any moment. He pulled a big garbage bag from under his jacket. He started sweeping jewelry trays into it. I lay on the floor, face down. I didn’t dare look up.
And I thought: “What can I do?”
